Royal Academy of Engineering
The Royal Academy of Engineering is a charity that harnesses the power of engineering to build a sustainable society and an inclusive economy that works for everyone. The Academy brings together employers, and employer-led organisations, for collaborative work on effective approaches to diversity and inclusion challenges faced by the engineering sector.
One of the practical ways in which they are working to make engineering more inclusive is through their Graduate Engineering Engagement Programme GEEP. This is an award-winning programme run in partnership with engineering employers, which aims to increase the transition of engineering graduates from diverse backgrounds into engineering employment.
As part of our ongoing partnership with The GEEP Programme, Amey support graduates to gain insights into engineering, learn employability skills and giving networking opportunities at a virtual conference. It aims to encourage engineering graduates from diverse backgrounds into engineering employment. Over the last five years, more than 800 students have taken part in the GEEP programme, more than 90% of whom are from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Social Mobility Pledge
We began a new partnership with the Social Mobility Pledge (SMP) built on our belief that talent is spread evenly, but opportunity is not. To kick off the partnership we hosted founder Justine Greening and the SMP team at our Staffordshire Highways project.
In 2021 we launched our 'Opportunity Action Plan' report – setting out recommendations and commitments to take forward. This will include action to increase and support social mobility, whilst supporting ex-offenders, veterans, and the long-term unemployed into work.
Social mobility is the link between a person's occupation or income and the occupation or income of their parents. Where there is a strong link, there is a lower level of social mobility. Where there is a weak link, there is a higher level of social mobility.
